The SDN-414 series is an inductorless shunt designed for wide bandwidth operation for AC and DC power systems, especially where phase angle and propagation delay are considerations and critical in impedance measurement and power calibration systems. Useful for increasing or expanding the current range of power analyzers, power meters, phase goniometers, frequency response analyzers, and multimeters. The SDN-414 Series Phase Angle Meter can measure the phase angle between voltage, voltage current, or current, making it ideal for phase protection relays, energy meters, and current transformer calibration.
CVRs are rugged, high-frequency resistors designed to maintain very high peak power and current inputs generated by capacitor banks, pulse generator systems, and steady-state current loads. Their linear response over a wide frequency band provides an accurate indication of the magnitude of the current without inductive components. The essence of CVR design is the coupling between major electrical parameters such as resistance, bandpass, energy capacity, and power rating. This means we offer a wide range of standard units covering a wide range of specifications.
Rated power
Although most CVRs are primarily used for inrush current measurements, their rugged construction and cryogenic coefficient resistive elements make them ideal for many steady-state applications. Therefore, the average power rating applicable to continuous current loads is referenced in each resistor series. In circuits involving AC or high duty cycle pulse currents, care should be taken not to exceed this rating, as overheating can cause CVR damage. If required, we can supply resistors of special construction to increase the standard power rating to a higher value depending on the model.
Frequency response
The bandpass of CVR is essentially flat from dc to upper limit, which is mainly determined by the skin effect in the resistive element. The bandpass correlation is based on the measured 10% to 90% rise time response to the current step function generated by the coaxial pulser. The di/dt of the test pulse exceeds 10^12 amperes/s.
Resistance value
Unless otherwise specified, resistors have a resistance tolerance of ±4% of the nominal value. In addition, each unit is equipped with a Kelvin bridge with an accuracy of ±0.2% resistance. We can offer a wide range of special resistance values for any standard cell.
Mechanical design
The housing structure of the fully coaxial CVR is silver-plated brass. Standard output signal connectors are BNC and other available connectors. Large coaxial CVRs are connected with high current flanges and coaxial threaded stud inputs. Powertek's low-profile configuration CVR, W Series, originally developed for flat panel transmission line mounting and available in a variety of unit width and input configurations, has been found to be particularly useful in applications requiring resistors with extreme energy and power ratings.
Global traceability
All measurements made with CVR series SDN-414 shunts are traceable to national and international standards; Measurement standards by Powertek. All CVR series SDN-414 switches come with the required certificates of conformity to quality assurance standards, such as IEC17025/ISO9001. Independent measurement certification can be performed using UKAS, A2LA or Z540/NAVLAP certificates.
