The UC3848 series of PWM control ICs makes disconnectors with primary-side average current mode control practical. Average current mode control ensures that the periodic peak switch current and maximum average inductor current for both periods are defined and will not run in a short circuit. The UC3848 can be used to control converters for a variety of topologies.

In addition to the basic functions required for pulse width modulation, the UC3848 implements a patented technique for sensing primary and secondary currents from a primary-side isolated buck converter. A current waveform synthesizer and analog display switch current inductor downhill so that the complete current waveform can be built on the secondary side without actually measuring the primary side.
