Designed for pulse-width modulation (PWM) current control in bipolar microstepper motors, the A3972SB is capable of continuously outputting current up to ±1.5 amps and operating at 50 volts. The internal fixed shutdown time pulse-width modulation (PWM) current control timing circuit can be programmed via a serial interface, allowing operation in slow, fast, and mixed current decay modes.
The desired load current level can be set by having two 6-position linear DAC serial interfaces and a voltage reference. The 6-position controller allows for maximum flexibility in torque control in a variety of stepper modes, from micro-stepping to full step-drive. The load current is set in 1.56% of the maximum increment.
Synchronous rectification circuitry allows load current to flow through the low rDS(on) of the DMOS output driver during current attenuation. This feature will eliminate the need for external clamping diodes in most applications, saving cost and the number of external components while minimizing power consumption.
Internal circuit protection includes overheating shutdown with delay, transient suppression diodes, and crossover current protection. No special power-up sequencing is required.
