The A3988 is a quad DMOS all-bridge drive that can drive two stepper motors or four DC motors. Each fully bridged output can reach 1.2 amps and 36 volts. The A3988 includes a fixed downtime pulse-width modulation (PWM) current regulator and a 2-position nonlinear DAC (digital-to-analog converter) that allows the stepper motor to be controlled in full, half, and quarter step modes, and the DC motor in forward, reverse, and free shutdown modes. PWM current regulators use Allegro's® patented hybrid attenuation mode to reduce audible motor noise, increase step accuracy, and reduce power dissipation.
An internal synchronous rectification control circuit is used to improve power consumption during pulse-width modulation (PWM) operation.
Protection features include overheating shutdown due to hysteresis, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and cross-current protection. No special power-up sequencing is required.
The A3988 is available in EV and JP packages with an exposed power sheet for enhanced thermal performance. The EV is available in a 6 mm x 6 mm, 36-pin QFN package with a 0.90 mm nominal overall package height. JP is a 7mm × 7mm 48-pin LQFP. Both packages are lead-free and feature 100% matte tin-plated pin frames.
