The PN532 is a highly integrated onetransceiverModule for 13.56 MHz contactless communication based on the 80C51 microcontroller core. It supports 6 different working modes:

  • ISO/IEC 14443A/MIFARE read/write mode
  • FeliCa read-write mode
  • ISO/IEC 14443B read-write mode
  • ISO/IEC 14443A/MIFARE Card MIFARE Classic 1K or MIFARE Classic 4K card emulation mode
  • FeliCa Card simulation
  • ISO/IEC 18092, ECMA 340 point-to-point

The PN532 integrates a demodulator and decoder to process signals from ISO/IEC 14443A/MIFARE compliant cards and transponders. PN532 handles complete ISO/IEC 14443A framing and error detection (parity and CRC).

The PN532 supports MIFARE Classic 1K or MIFARE Classic 4K card emulation modes. The PN532 supports two-way contactless communication using MIFARE's high transmission rate (up to 424 kb/s).

The PN532 demodulates and decodes FeliCa encoded signals. PN532 handles FeliCa framing and error detection. The PN532 supports two-way contactless communication with FeliCa's high transmission rate (up to 424 kb/s).

The PN532 supports Layer 2 and Layer 3 ISO/IEC 14443 B read-write communication modes, but does not support anti-interference. Interference protection must be achieved through firmware and upper layers.

In card emulation mode, the PN532 responds to read and write commands according to the FeliCa or ISO/IEC 14443A/MIFARE card interface scheme. The PN532 generates a load-modulated signal from the transmitter or from the LOADMOD pin that drives external active circuitry. Complete security card functionality can only be provided if it is used with a security IC via the NFC-WI/S²C interface.

The PN532 complies with ECMA 340 and ISO/IEC 18092 NFCIP-1 passive and active communication mode standards and can communicate with other NFCIP-1 compatible devices at transfer rates up to 424 kb/s. The PN532 handles complete NFCIP-1 framing and error detection.

PN532transceiverExternal antennas can be connected for read-write mode or Card/PICC mode without any active components.

The PN532 supports the following host interfaces:

  • SPI
  • I²C
  • High-Speed UART (HSU)

An embedded low-dropout voltage regulator allows the device to be connected directly to the battery. In addition, a power switch is integrated to power the safety IC.

  • MIFARE Classic 1K or MIFARE Classic 4K encryption in read-write mode is supported, and MIFARE has higher communication transmission speeds at 212 kb/s and 424 kb/s
  • Supports contactless communication in accordance with the FeliCa protocol at 212 kb/s and 424 kb/s
  • Integrated RF interface for up to 424 kb/s NFCIP-1
  • External analog components can be used to communicate on the RF interface at speeds greater than 424 kb/s
