The TPS65217 is a single chippower managementIC, which is specifically designed to support the AM335x family of application processors in portable and 5-V, non-portable applications. It provides a linear battery charger for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries, dual input power paths, 3 buck converters, 4 LDOs, and a high-efficiency boost converter to power 2 strings of LEDs with up to 10 LEDs per string. This system can be powered by a USB port, a 5-V AC adapter, or any combination of lithium-ion batteries. The device is specified for operation over the –40°C to +105°C temperature range, making it suitable for industrial applications. The purpose of the three high-efficiency 2.25-MHz buck converters is to provide core, memory, and/or I/O voltages to a processor-based system.Temperature sensor
To achieve maximum efficiency over the maximum possible load current range, they enter a low power mode at light loads. For low noise applications, by using I2
C interface, this device can be forced into fixed frequency PWM. This buck converter allows the use of small inductors and capacitors to achieve a small solution size.
LDO1 and LDO2 are designed to support system standby mode. In the sleep state, the output current is limited
100 μA to reduce quiescent current, while in normal mode they can each support 100 mA. The LDO3 and LDO4 can each support up to 200 mA and can be configured as a load switch instead of a regulator. All four LDOs have a wide input voltage range that allows them to be powered by one of the DCDC converters or directly from the system voltage junction.
By default, only LDO1 is always on (ON), but any power rail can be configured to remain asleep. In particular, DCDC converters can continue to be in a low power pulse frequency modulation (PFM) mode to support processor pause mode.
The TPS65217 provides flexible power-up and power-down sequencing and several housekeeping features such as a power-good output, pushbutton monitor, hardware reset function, and temperature sensor to protect the battery.
The TPS65217A supports the AM335x processor in the ZCE package, which does not support DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling). Within this package, the VDD_MPU and VDD_CORE supplies are shorted together and only a single supply rail is required. To power DDR2 memory, the DCDC1 output voltage is set to 1.8 V. The TPS65217B targets the AM335x processor in the ZCZ package, which supports DVFS and requires a dedicated DCDC converter for VDD_MPU and VDD_CORE rails. To power DDR2 memory, the DCDC1 output voltage is set to 1.8 V. The TPS65217C is used in the AM335x processor in the ZCZ package, but to power the DDR3 memory, the DCDC1 output voltage is set to 1.5 V. LDO3 is set to 1.8 V and supports currents up to 400-mA. See Application Note SLVU551 for details.
The TPS65217A, TPS65217B, and TPS65217C are available in a 48-lead leadless package (6-mm x 6-mm QFN) with a 0.4-mm pitch.
