The Allegro™ ACS722 current sensor IC is an affordable, accurate solution for AC or DC current sensing in industrial, commercial, and communications systems. The small package is ideal for applications where space is at a premium, while the smaller board area also saves costs. Typical applications include motor control, load detection and management, switching power supplies, and overcurrent fault protection.
The device consists of a low biasPrecision linear Hall sensorsThe circuit consists of a copper current path close to the surface of the wafer. The current applied through this copper current path generates a magnetic field that can be sensed by the integrated Hall IC and converted into a proportional voltage. Device accuracy optimization is achieved by placing the magnetic field close to the Hall sensor. The precise proportional voltage is provided by a chopper-stabilized, low-bias BiCMOS Hall IC that includes Allegro's patented digital temperature compensation for extremely accurate temperature performance. As more and more current flows through the copper main current path, from pins 1 and 2 to pins 3 and 4, the output of the device is a positive slope. The preceding path is the path used by current sensing. The internal resistance of this conduction path is typically 0.65 mΩ and the power dissipation is low.
The terminals of the current path are electrically isolated from the sensor pins (pins 5 through 8). This allows the ACS722 current sensor IC to be used in high-side current sensing applications that do not use high-side differential amplifiers or other costly insulation techniques.
The ACS722 is available in a small, low-profile surface-mount SOIC8 package. The leadframe is 100% matte tin plating for compatibility with standard lead-free printed circuit board assembly processes. The device is internally lead-free, with the exception of flip-chip high-temperature leaded solder balls that currently enjoy RoHS exemptions. The device is fully calibrated before shipping from the factory.
