The AD8436 provides true RMS results at a lower cost than misleading peak, mean, or digital solutions. With no programming costs or processor overhead, the 4 mm x 4 mm package easily fits into space-constrained applications. On-chip buffer amplifiers offer the widest range of options to fit all RMS-TO-DC converters regardless of cost. The lowest-cost applications require only one external averaging capacitor. The built-in high-impedance FET buffer provides an interface that can be used for external attenuators, frequency compensation, or to drive low-impedance loads. It has a pair of matching internal resistors that make it easy to achieve a gain configuration of 2 or more, and the available input range can be extended to a lower level. The AD8436 features a low-power precision input buffer, making it ideal for portable multimeters and other battery-powered applications.

The AD8436 is available from a single or dual supply and ranges from ±2.4 V (4.8 V) to ±18 V (36 V). Grades A and J are available in a compact 20-pin 4 mm x 4 mm chip-scale package; Grades A and B are also available in 20-pin QSOP packages. There are two operating temperature ranges: −40°C to 125°C for Class A and B, and 0°C to 70°C for Class J.
