The A8512 is a multi-output WLED/RGB driver for backlighting mid-size displays. The A8512 incorporates a boost controller that drives an external MOSFET and six internal current draws. The boost converter operates in constant frequency (programmable) current mode.
PWM light and dark adjustment ensures that LED current is controlled at a 500:1 ratio. Each LED draw can draw 80 mA of current and can be connected in parallel to provide higher currents. In addition, multiple A8512s can be connected in parallel, using a single main controller to control the boost stage, connecting up to five slave controllers that act as LED feed-in. This allows up to 36 LED strings to be powered with just one boost converter.
The A8512 can be operated from a single supply with a voltage range of 8 to 24V. It provides overvoltage, open LED string, short circuit, and overheating protection. The two-stage wave-by-wave current limiting feature provides soft-start and overload protection.
The device is available in a 24-pin SOICW package (LB) with built-in condensation pins for enhanced thermal dissipation and a 28-contact 5 mm × 5 mm QFN package (ET) with external thermal pads for enhanced thermal dissipation. Both packages are lead-free and feature 100% matte tin-plated pinframes.
