® The LT 1511 current mode PWM battery charger is the simplest and most efficient solution to modern fast charging rechargeable batteries, including lithium-ion batteries (Li-Ion), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel-cadmium (NiCd), which require constant current and/or constant voltage charging. An internal switch capable of delivering 3A DC current (4A peak current). The full charge current can be within 5% of the resistor or DAC. With 0.5% reference accuracy, the LT1511 meets critical constant voltage Li-Ion battery charging requirements. The third control loop provides the current that is regulated to draw from the AC adapter. This allows charging the battery while operating the device and without overloading the adapter. The charging current is reduced to keep the adapter at its currently specified level. The LT1511 can be charged from a 1V to 20V battery. Current ground detection is not necessary and can be directly connected to the negative ground of the battery. Saturate the switches running at 200kHz, resulting in high charging efficiency and small inductor size. There is no need to block between the diode chip and the battery, because the chip goes into sleep mode when the wall adapter is unplugged by only 3μA.
