The A8672 is a synchronous step-down converter that delivers up to 8 amps. The A8672 utilizes minimal current mode control for extremely short turn-on times. This is ideal for applications that require output voltages much lower than input voltages and require high switching frequencies. Minimum current mode control uses a voltage feedforward loop to adjust the frequency during large changes in signal load, resulting in better transient response than traditional switching solutions.

The A8672 includes a complete set of diagnostic identifiers to allow the host platform to respond to a variety of conditions. The fault output indicates when the temperature rises abnormally or when a single point of fault occurs, for example, a switching node (LX) ground short, or an open hour resistor. A Power Operating Normal (POK) output is also available after a fixed delay to show when the output voltage is within the regulation range. Optional pulse-by-pulse current limiting eliminates the need to increase the inductor specification to overcome large fault currents.

The unit is available in a 28-contact, 4 mm × 5 mm, 0.75 mm nominal overall height QFN package (EG) with an exposed heat sink. The package is lead-free and features a 100% matte tin-plated pinframe.
