The LP3943 is an integrated device capable of driving 16 LEDs independently. The device also contains an internal precision oscillator that provides all the necessary timing needed to drive each LED. Two pre-divider registers, as well as two PWM registers, provide a universal duty cycle control. The LP3943 contains SMBus/I 2C for LED brightness, where the ability to cut bus communication applications is required.

Traditionally, LED brightness using serial shift registers such as the 74LS594/5 will require a large amount of traffic on the serial bus. LP3943, instead of just having to set the frequency and duty cycle for each output pin. From then on, a single command from a single host was to program the frequency and duty cycle of each person's open-drain output, off, or loop. The maximum output sink current is 25 mA per pin and 200 milliamps per pack. The controlled LEDs do not use any ports and can be used for universal input/output expansion.
